Rama Setu: call by Jayalalithaa for dismissal of CM

Ramar Sethu: Jayalalithaa to lead demonstration on Sept. 26

Chennai, Sept. 22 (PTI): Accusing Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK president M Karunanidhi of violating the Constitution on Ramar Sethu issue, AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa today said she would lead a demonstration on September 26, demanding either his resignation or dismissal.

The party would stage demonstrations at all district headquarters in the state, besides in Puducherry, Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, New Delhi and Andaman and Nicobar islands, she said in a statement here.

Jayalalithaa, who is at present staying at her Kodanadu estate in Nilgiris district, will lead the demonstration in Udhagamandalam.

As per the Constitution, the Union and State Governments should observe secularism by treating all religions alike. Further, making remarks that would hurt the sentiments of people practising any religion would attract a punishment of three years of imprisonment, she said.

Inciting communal riots and creating law and order problem through inflammatory speeches would also attract one year of imprisonment, she added.

“When the law applies to the common man, it is even more applicable to a Chief Minister who has the responsibility of maintaining the law and order in the state,” she said.

“One should not forget that the Central and State Governments are elected by Hindus, who constitute a majority in the Indian population,” she added.

Jayalalithaa said “a Chief Minister can be an atheist or a believer in a particular faith. It is his personal matter. But, when he assumes the office of the Chief Minister, he should set aside his likes and dislikes and treat all people with respect without any bias.”

“He should not forget that he is a Chief Minister for not only those who have voted for him but also for those who have not,” she added.

It was highly condemnable that Karunanidhi continued to hurt the sentiments of crores of Hindus across the globe “by speaking ill of Lord Ram,” she said.

She demanded that Karunanidhi step down from the Chief Minister’s post “for having violated the Indian Constitution” or the Centre dismiss his Government.
