With the sound of kettle drums and conches, Rama arrives to Lanka with his army. Ravana hears those sounds and calls his ministers to chalk out his further course of action. Malyavan, Ravana’s maternal grandfather advises Ravana to conclude peace with Rama and restore Seetha to him as he is perceiving adverse omens.

Notes: Bhitargaon is on the Ghatampur-Sarh Road, Ghatampur Taluk, Uttar Pradesh — 59 km. from Kanpur. The place has an ancient brick temple, a unique architectural specimen belonging to the Gupta era, 5th cent. This is a roofed Hindu mandiram with a high s’ikhara.

“Many hundreds and thousands of demons, demi-demons, Yaksas, Raksasas [man-eaters] and others, headed by Sumali and Mali, resisted the armies of King Indra, which even death personified cannot easily overcome. Among the demons were Namuci, Sambara, Anarva, Dvimurdha, Rsabha, Asura, Hayagriva, Sankusira, Vipracitti, Ayomukha, Puloma, Vrsaparva, Praheti, Heti and Utkala. Roaring tumultuously and fearlessly like lions, these invincible demons, all dressed in golden ornaments, gave pain to the demigods with weapons like clubs, bludgeons, arrows, barbed darts, mallets and lances.”

Srimad-Bhagavatam 6:10:19-22

“Thereafter, two very powerful demons named Mali and Sumali were killed by the Supreme Lord, who severed their heads with His disc. Then Malyavan, another demon, attacked the Lord. With his sharp club, the demon, who was roaring like a lion, attacked Garuda, the lord of the birds, who are born from eggs. But the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the original person, used His disc to cut off the head of that enemy also.”

Malyavan was the elder brother of Ravana’s actual maternal grandfather Sumali and once used to be the figurehead ruler of lanka, later Ravana reconqured it.

In addition to the royal protocal relations that he had with Ravana, he was the maternal grandfather of Ravan, therefore, he had a dual relationship. In the latter relationship, he was known for trying to persuade Ravan outside the chambers of protocol and advising him as a grandfather. Ravan respected him tremendously because of their relation and due to his intelligence.

Malyavan was against the war with Lord Rama and had tried to convince Ravan to let go to Sita; however, all his advise was rejected by Ravan. After the death of Ravan, Malyavan remained in his position and became the chief adviser to Vibishana, Ravan’s younger brother and Malyavan’s second grandson. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malyavan

Ravana turns his deaf ear to the words of Malyavan and even abuses him that the latter exaggerating the strength of Rama. Ravana further says that he will not restore Seetha to Rama and that Rama and his army will not go back alive, having crossed the ocean and reached Lanka. http://www.valmikiramayan.net/yuddha/sarga36/yuddhaitrans36.htm

When lord Visnu pursued the fleeing army of the demons, Malyavan said to him:

Do you not know the code of a warrior’s conduct?
Contrary to that code, why do you wish to kill those who have retired from the battle and who are therefore non-combatants?”

The Lord replied:
“You are cruel, and the gods are living in fear of you.
Their protection is dearer to me than my own life.
Hence I shall destroy you wherever you are.”

These words roused the anger of Malyavan who immediately attacked the Lord with his powerful weapons.

The Lord received those missiles and hurled them back at the demon himself: gravely hurt by them, Malyavan was stunned for some time, though he soon regained his strength.
He roared mightily and hit both Visnu and Garuda.
In great fury, Garuda turned the full blast of wind against Malyavan who fled to Lanka.
Seeing him retire to Lanka, Sumali also went away to Lanka.
Unable to stand the supreme might of lord Visnu, the demons with Malyavan and Sumali at their head, went away to the netherworld, leaving Lanka in charge of the lord of wealth.”

Whenever there is loss of dharma on earth, the Lord incarnates himself in order to destroy the demons and to restore dharma. http://tinyurl.com/ysbcpy
